Tobacco Heritage Trail
Journey south to Lawrenceville to hike a 2.5-mile section of the Tobacco Heritage Trail. Start at the edge of the town and head west along Great Creek. Pass along rolling pastures and forests while learning about this rail-to-trail project. Total distance will be about 4.5-5 miles.

Head south barely over the North Carolina line to explore the enchanting swamp and millpond at Merchants Millpond State Park. An easy 4-mile hike will travel along bottomland, swamps and rivers to view majestic cypress and tupelo gum trees and, maybe, an American alligator.

Mountain Meadow Hike
Begin this hike at Hog Camp Gap, then ramble along the Appalachian Trail to the mountain meadow of Cold Mountain. The 4,000-plus-foot high meadow provides a panoramic view of the George Washington National Forest, surrounding mountains and Shenandoah Valley. This IS one of the most spectacular- views in the George Washington Forest. The hike will be approximately 3.5 miles and only 480 feet of elevation gain. Bring a packed lunch.
